Death Claims Judge James R. Dowdell.
After an illness extending over many months Judge James R. Dowdell died at his home in this city yesterday evening at 8 o'clock. In his death the state of Alabama has lost one of its most distinguished citizens.
Judge Dowdell was born near LaFayette, April 12, 1847. He entered the Confederate navy as a cadet in 1864. After the war he completed his education, graduating at the A.P.I. and at the University of Alabama. In 1870 he was admitted to the bar and began the practice of law in LaFayette. He served as solicitor of the ninth judicial circuit from 1876 to 1880; was chancellor of the Northeastern Division from 1896 to 1898; was elected associate justice of the supreme court in 1898, serving in that capacity until his promotion to the chief justiceship of the court, from which position he resigned in 1914, retiring to private life.
Judge Dowdell was twice married, first to Miss Rosie Turner, of LaFayette in 1871, and second to Miss Ella M. Ware, of LaFayette, in 1878. He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. W. A. Denson, of Birmingham, who was called here several days ago on account of her father's illness; two brothers, Mr. J. S. Dowdell, of this city, and Mr. Louis Dowdell, of Houston, Texas, and a large number of other relatives.
Judge Dowdell was universally esteemed by the citizens of his home town and county, as well as by many friends throughout the state. He had been a member of the Methodist Church since early life and was an ardent supporter of all good work. A long and useful life has ended and a good man has passed to his reward.
Funeral services will be held at the LaFayette Methodist Church Thursday morning at 10:00 o'clock, conducted by Rev. W. B. Hope, the pastor, assisted by Rev. W. T. Hollingsworth and Dr. W. C. Bledsoe. Interment will be in the city cemetery.

The funeral of Judge J. R. Dowdell, former chief justice of the supreme court of Alabama and one of the foremost citizens of the state, who died at his home in this city Tuesday evening, June 28, was held at the LaFayette Methodist Church last Thursday morning at 10 o'clock.
The services were conducted by Rev. W. B. Hope, the pastor, assisted by Dr. W. C. Bledsoe and Rev. W. T. Hollingsworth. Mr. Hollingsworth delivering the funeral address. Beautiful and appropriate selections were sung by the choir and the service was solemn and impressive throughout. Interment was in the city cemetery.
The supreme court of Alabama, out of respect to the memory of their former chief justice, suspended all business during the hour of the funeral.
Judge Dowdell lived a long and useful life, holding many important positions, among them being that of chief justice of the supreme court, one of the highest positions in the gift of the people. He was held in high esteem by the people of Alabama and all had the utmost confidence in his integrity and ability.
The love of his fellow citizens was attested by the large crowd that gathered at the church last Thursday morning to pay their last respects to his memory.
Among the out-of-town relatives attending the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Dowdell, Judge W. H. Thomas, Judge W. H. Samford, of Montgomery; Colonel T. B. Samford, Richard Samford, Mr. and Mrs. C. A. L. Samford, Mrs. W. J. Samford, of Opelika.
