The first of his family to come to America was Robert's g'grandfather George Sommerville, one of 5 brothers who came here from Gransha near Londonderry in Northern Ireland. George came some years before the Revolutionary War. He settled in Chambersburg, York Co. Pennsylvania. He later moved to Frederick Co. Virginia where he died in 1801.
