Gene Louis Matthews was born Dec. 26, 1951 in Alice, TX where his father was starting his career in the oil business. He graduated from Putnam City High School in 1970.

Gene began his career in the oil industry shortly after high school and was a professional mud engineer for many years before starting his own successful mud company, Phantom Drilling Fluids, which he operated until his death. Gene was widely known and respected in the oil industry as was evident by his many friends who loved him and considered him their friend. It was said many times that Gene never met a stranger and he treated everyone he knew or met with the utmost respect. He was passionate about life and loved to travel with family and friends. He seemed to have a good time wherever he went.

He was an avid golfer and a member of Twin Hills and Quail Creek Country Clubs. His other passions in life included fishing, entertaining his friends, his lake home, but his greatest passion in life was the love he had for his family.

He was preceded in death by his father, D.W. "Pete" Matthews. Gene is survived by his mother, Opal Matthews of Midland, TX; and his wife, Angie; two sons, Brian Matthews and wife April, and grandson, Mason of Edmond, Jay Matthews and Kaycee Mode of Edmond; his three brothers, Jim Matthews and wife Judy of Tyler, TX, Alan Matthews of Edmond, Ray Matthews and wife Melissa of Midland, TX; a sister-in-law, Charlotte Matthews of Edmond; an aunt, Opha Lutrick of Godley, TX; and sisters-in-law, Dana and Bob Hill of Garland, TX, and Debbie and Ralph Wilson of Cushing, OK.

He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews including Holly and Bruce Bailey, Brittany and Kylie Bailey of Duncan, Michael and Sarah Matthews and Luke and Abbey Matthews of Edmond, Matt Matthews of Ft. Worth, TX, Jake, Chad and Bryce Matthews of Midland, TX, Gina Ritter Burchfiel and John Burchfiel of Mustang, OK, Chris and Jill Ritter of Austin, TX, Robert and Tracie Wilson of Ft. Gibson, OK, Devon and Michael Cooper of Vancouver, WA, Jack and Alex Ritter, Reese Wilson and Sophia Cooper. Family also includes cousins, Mike and Cindy Lutrick of Godley, TX, Shanda Wilson of Petersburg, TX and Ted Matthews of Petersburg, TX. In addition to his family, Gene is survived by his many friends whom he loved so much.

Memorial services for Gene will be 3 pm on Thursday, Sept. 24, at Edmond Church of Christ, 801 S. Bryant, Edmond, under the direction of Crawford Family Funeral & Cremation Service. The family requests memorial donations to be made to The Jesus House of OKC.
