WOLCOTT — Mr. John "Scotty" H. Scott Sr., 89, passed away peacefully in the presence of loving family on Saturday, Aug. 6, 2011, at VITAS Hospice at Saint Mary's Hospital. He was the husband of Dorothy (Bogues) Scott.
John was born Sept. 16, 1921, in Kathleen, Ga., son of the late Samuel Scott and Carrie J. Scott Lundy. John was educated in the Soperton, Ga., school system. He was a veteran of World War II, having served with the Engineering Aviation Battalion, 5th Army Air Corps. As a member of Company C, 1873rd, John served in the New Guinea Campaign and the Ryukyu Campaign (Ie Shima/Okinawa). John served from 1942 until his honorable discharge at Fort Devins, Mass., in 1946, attaining the rank of Tech 5. During his basic training, he was awarded Rifle Sharpshooter and Pistol Marksman badges and earned many medals, among them the American Theatre Campaign Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with 2 battle stars, the Good Conduct Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal. In May 2011, he was among several veterans honored by the Waterbury Veteran's Memorial Committee at the Annual Support Our Troops Dinner where he was awarded the Connecticut Veterans Wartime Service Medal and the Waterbury Medal.
Before entering the Army, John worked as a machinist in New London, and after discharge worked for Scovill Manfacturing/Century Brass until his retirement in 1981.
Among his activities, he was most proud of his association with the American Legion. He faithfully served the William O. Wilson Post No. 135 for many years - even doing his time as commander. He was a founding member of the Post's Co-Op and instrumental in the purchase of the Post headquarters on North Main Street in Waterbury.
He loved his garden and his baseball games - first and foremost the Yankees, but a good Mets or Boston Red Sox game could get him talking. He was also an avid reader and loved sitting out on his front steps watching the cars.
John is survived by his wife and partner of 60 years, Dorothy Mae (Bogues) Scott of Wolcott; and 11 children, Charles Scott of Waterbury, Janette Scott of Waterbury, Banita Brewer (John) of Waterbury, John Scott Jr. of New Haven, Willie Scott (Rhonda) of Wolcott, Elner Morrell (Randy) of Prospect, Annie Scott of Waterbury, Rosemarie Wallace (Lewis) of Danbury, Michael Scott of Waterbury, Christopher Scott (Jennifer) of Wolcott, and Andre Scott of Waterbury. "Big Daddy" is also survived by 17 grandchildren/step-grandchildren, Marc, Jeff, Charles, Kelsie, John, Trivon, Kylle, Samuel, Joseph, Alex, Gwendolyn, Jay, Sabrina, Phillip-Michael, Marissa, Julianna, and Sierra, and seven great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother, Willie Frank Scott of Philadelphia, Pa., and a son, Samuel D. Scott of Wolcott.
Funeral service will be held 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 12, 2011, at Rehoboth Church of God in Christ Jesus, 101 East Farm St. Burial with full military honors will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 13, 2011, at New Pine Grove Cemetery. Calling hour will be held 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 12, 2011, at the church. The family will receive friends at the church from 6:30 p.m. until the time of service and at all other times at the home of his daughter, Banita Brewer, at 47 Hopkins St., Waterbury.
