Edgar was the eleventh child of twelve children born to Frederick Richard Blenkarn and Mary Ann Fannie Ingram. As a young man, Edgar was a reporter for several years on the Birkenhead Advertiser, before he came to Canada in 1904 at the age of twenty-seven. He continued as a reporter for one of the Regina, Saskatchewan papers for a short time before receiving a position with the Department of Agriculture in what then was the Government of the Northwest Territories. He remained with the department until 1907, when he was nearly ordered to take the place of the head court reporter of the Supreme court, when the then court reporter collapsed during a court session.

Edgar told the Attorney General he wasn't qualified for that position, but was told "Mr. Powell, says you are and they are now waiting for you." Thus, he became a court reporter and kept it up for 5 months. It was too much for him and they gave him another position as private secretary to the Master of Titles, in the Land Titles Office. He was there until 1910 when his eyes played out on him. He was told he must not work in an office again for at least three years.

In the mean time, he had met and married Florence M. Craig on September 1, 1908. They had six children:

Joel Frederick
Frances Enid
Irene Evelyn
Cecil Edwin
Alice Beatrice
Keith Ingram
