Kermit W. Johnson, age 83, a resident of Woodside Manor, Valders, died Saturday evening, Jan. 10, 2004 at Aurora Medical Center, Two Rivers.

Funeral services will be held 11am Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2004 at Faith Lutheran Church, Valders. Officiating at the service will be the Rev. Donald Staude with burial to follow at Valders West Cemetery.

Kermit was born March 4, 1920 in the Town of Liberty, son of the late Joel C. and Mabel Torrison Johnson. He was a graduate of Valders High School with the class of 1938. Kermit served with the US Army Air Force during World War II with the Medic Division. He attended Lakeshore Technical College for four years receiving his certificate in agriculture. On Nov. 24, 1945, he married Gladys Schwalbe. She preceded him in death on Nov. 18, 1951. On March 7, 1953, he married the former Irma Schurr. Kermit was a dairy farmer and also sold insurance for Eastern Mutual for more than 30 years. He was on the board of directors for Manitowoc County ASCS for 25 years, retiring as chairman of the board and treasurer for the Town of Liberty of 16 years. Kermit was directly involved with the committee responsible for building Memorial Hospital. He also helped form the Liberty Go-Getters 4-H Club and was a member of the Rim Rock Riders Riding Club. He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, Valders.

Survivors include his wife: Irma Johnson, Valders; one son and daughter-in-law: Keith and Brenda Johnson, Valders; four grandchildren: Tiffany (Robert) Bangs, Whitefish Bay; Kimberly (Matthew) Mayzik, Milwaukee; Kenneth (Tracy) Johnson, Valders; Craig (Amy) Johnson, Valders; nine great-grandchildren: Tori, Kayla, Kassie, and Brandyn Johnson; Nathan Mayzik; Emerald, Alyssa, and Kolten Johnson; Abigail Bangs; one sister: Ruth Bloedorn, Appleton; two brothers-in-law: Henry Schurrr and his wife Elaine, Manitowoc; Charles Hougen, rural Manitowoc; three sisters-in-law: Dororthy Johnson, Torrance, CA; Alice Nass, rural Manitowoc; and Sylvia Schwalbe, rural Manitowoc. Kermit was also preceded in death by one grandson: Paul Johnson; one brother: Robert Johnson; two brothers-in-law: Elroy Nass and Milton Schwalbe; two sisters-in-law: Ruth Hougen and Mae Hougen and her husband, Alton.

The family will greet relatives and friends Tuesday evening, January 13, 2004 at Faith Lutheran Chruch, Valders, from 4 to 7pm. Visitation will continue Wednesday morning at Faith Lutheran Church from 10am until the time of service at 11am.

The Christianson & Deja Funeral Home and Cremation Care Center, Valders, is assisting the Johnson family with funeral arrangements.
