Fay Moffatt Tilbury immigrated to the United States from Nova Scotia, Canada with her parents and siblings in about 1859. It is reported she was 7 years old. The family moved to Boston, then moved west to Iowa. In 1870, Carey Tilbury, fresh from seminary came from Illinois with his wife and two young daughters, Lucy and Grace to Mount Ayr, where he founded the First Baptist Church. Shortly, after moving to Mount Ayr, his wife died. In 1873 she met her future husband, Rev. Carey Tilbury. She raisied his daughters and they had three girls: Flola May, Anna Belle and Georgia Emma.
The Carmen, Oklahoma newspaper, The Headlight, July 14 1911 wrote a long tribute to her. Rev and Mrs. Fay Tilbury founded the First Baptist church in Carmen. In part it reads...
The entire community was saddened by the death of Mrs. Fay Tilbury Tuesday morning. Her death was not entirely unexpected as she had been as she had been sick for a some months and all hope of recovery had been abandoned. The funeral was held Thursday morning and all business houses were closed in as mark of respect.
