Groves, 56, of Cleveland, W.Va., who had hopes of retiring soon, was married with two adult children, said another brother, Raymond.
"Times are pretty hard here in West Virginia," Raymond Groves said. "(Mining) is about all you can do to make a living."
He died in a mining accident with 11 coworkers after lightning caused an explosion.
He is survived by his mother,Wanda M. Bankhead. His wife, Deborah A. Groves, a daughter Shelly and husband Mike Rose, of King George, Va.; grandchildren Eric Rose, 11, Zachary Rose, 7, and Matthew Rose, 4; brothers Raymond Groves of Cowen, Bobby Groves of Cleveland, John Groves of Cleveland, and Ronnie Groves of Birch River. He is also survived by sisters Geraldine Bruso of Tampa, Fla.; Sandra Neel of Bridgeport and Beckie Rodgers of Weston.
He was preceded in death by his father the late Charles Aaron Groves, and one brother, Donald Groves.
Jerry was a member of the Cleveland Independent Baptist Church.
The family will greet friends at the Heavner and Cutright Funeral Chapel on Saturday from 5 to 9 p.m. Memorial services will be held on Sunday, January 8, 2006 at the Cleveland Independent Baptist Church in Cleveland, with Rev. Chris Cosner officiating.
