Making his fortune in the production of black gunpowder, he was one of the wealthiest men in Lowell and for many years was the largest individual taxpayer in Lowell.

He was active in Lowell's political system and held several elected positions first in the city and the later in the state representing the City of Lowell. He helped draw up Lowell's original city charter.

He was married three times
1st Sophronia Hale, 1821-1836;
2nd Julia A nn Wentworth, 1837-1843;
3rd Sarah Kinsman, 1844-1872
and had ten children.

Whipple was also one of the founders of the Lowell Cemetery where he and his family members are now buried.
