Alice Erlene Carter Johnson, 87, of the Horton Highway, Greeneville, died early Tuesday morning at her home.

"She died peacefully in her home with her family at her bedside," the family stated.

Mrs. Johnson was a daughter of the late A.P. Carter and Nannie Carter of the Albany Community near Mosheim.

Her family described her as "a devout Christian woman and a longtime member of the Brown Springs Baptist Church, where she not only worshipped but served in many capacities."

Her family further stated: "She served as church clerk of session, Woman's Missionary Union Director, Baptist Women on Mission Day Group, formed and taught for many years the Willing Workers Bible Sunday School Class, and later taught the Golden Circle Sunday School Class, Discipleship Training, and the nursing-home ministry. She was a member of the Second Worship Service Sanctuary Choir.

"She was very active in the Collegiate Ministry at Walters' State Community College. She was known for her visitation and ministry to the community, as well as over Greene County, with her companion in that endeavor, Lena Pearl Tunnell, who died in July, 2009.

"She was instrumental in compiling the history of the Big Springs Baptist Church, Brown Springs Baptist Church, and the Carter's Station Methodist Church at Albany, all of which were formed and lead by her forefathers.

"For many years she was a member of the Albany Family Community and Education club (formerly the Home Demonstration Club).

"Erlene entered Takoma Hospital as a nursing student and transferred to the Gallinger Hospital in Washington, D.C., to continue her studies. It was while in Washington that she met and married her late husband, Thomas Warren Johnson Sr., who was wounded in Normandy. A recipient of the Purple Heart, he is interred in Arlington National Cemetery. After his death, she continued to live in Washington with their two children, the late Thomas Warren "Mickey" Johnson Jr. and Sandra Johnson Gaby.

"After returning to Greeneville and having graduated from business college, and having also obtained her realtor's license, she became the accountant for her family's real estate firm, Carter Brother's Real Estate, where she worked for many years until she retired.

"At the age of 74, and still working as a bookkeeper, she learned and implemented at the company, the Quick Books Bookkeeping Computer System."

She was preceded in death by a sister: Sue Poindexter; and four brothers: Hershel Carter, Macolin Carter, Billy Joe Carter, and Grady Carter.
