SAUGUS, Mass – James F. Down, 86, of this town died Monday in the Melrose-Wakefield hospital following a long illness.
He was born and educated in Hastings, Eng., moved to Canada and served in the Canadian Army Medical Corps in France in World War I. He came to this country in 1928 and lived many years in Malden, where he was a salesman for Lincoln Library before retiring. His wife, the former Katherine Gibson, died nine years ago.
He leaves three sons, Erle H. of Melrose, James S. of Westbrook, Maine, Edward M. of Marblehead and Francis W. Holland of Saugus; also a daughter, Mrs. Katherine G. Phinney of Westbrook, Maine; 13 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and a sister living in England.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the First Baptist Church of Malden. Interment will be in Forest Dale Cemetery, Malden.
