Life Long Resident of Marion County Dies In Cook Hospital

After an illness of several weeks, Mrs. Martha Jane Toothman, aged 81 years, a greatly beloved woman of the city and life long resident of Marion County, passed away yesterday afternoon shortly past 1 o'clock in Cook Hospital. She resided with her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Fred M. Wilson in their home in the West End, and was taken to the hospital a few days ago where she underwent an operation for gall stones. The operation was performed as a last resort to prolong her life and she failed to rally from its effects.

The deceased was born March 12, 1850, near Rivesville, and she was the daughter of the late John Cunningham Hoult and Susanna Barr Hoult early settlers of Marion County. She has two brothers deceased, Thomas and Scott Hoult, and a sister, Susan Straight, of Mannington, is also deceased. Surviving are two half-sisters, Rose and Elizabeth Hoult, of Stockton, Cal., and a half-sister, Margaret Hoult, is deceased. Brothers departed are David, William and Frank Hoult.

Mrs. Toothman was the widow of Thornton J. Toothman. The surviving children are Harry S. Toothman, of Mt. Clare; Omer S. Toothman, of Watson; Mrs. Fred M. Wilson, of this city. There are three grandchildren living and one grandchild, Kenneth Toothman, died overseas in the World War. There are eight great grandchildren. Mrs. Toothman was a devout member of the Methodist Protestant Church of Watson and took an active part in the work of the church. Mrs. Toothman belonged to the daughters of Rebekah, No. 64, Pythian Sisters, at Watson, and had the distinction of being the oldest member in point of years of the West Virginia District of Pythian Sisters. She was active in the various organizations for many years and was popular among the members.

The funeral will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Wilson residence in the West End with the Rev. W. R. Hinzman, pastor of the Watson Methodist Protestant Church officiating, assisted by Dr. J. C. Broomfield, president of the general conference, and the Rev. E. S. Hawkins, pastor of Methodist Protestant Temple. Burial will be made in the Pharoah's Run cemetery, Rivesville, by R. C. Jones, funeral director."
