Mr. Joseph E. Abernathy, Jr., age 82 of Center Point Road, Carrollton died Saturday, April 30, 2011.

Mr. Abernathy was born in Gaylesville, Alabama on February 17, 1929, the son of the late Joseph E. Abernathy, Sr. and Della Lawson Abernathy.

He graduated from Gaylesville High School and served in the U.S. Army in the 19th Infantry Regiment during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Abernathy began a career in the banking and finance field in 1952. He was retired Senior Vice President of West Georgia National Bank, retiring December 1993.

Mr. Abernathy was a former member of the Optimist Club, a life member of the Yaarab Shrine Temple, Atlanta, Carroll Masonic Lodge #69 and the Carrollton First United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Martha S. Abernathy; daughter and son-in-law, Anita Abernathy Haynes and Jerry Haynes of Carrollton; grandchildren, Matthew Stewart Haynes(Tara Lee Fouts), Kathryn Bonnie Haynes; brother, Rex L. Abernathy of Rome and several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, William Clinton Abernathy and sister, Hazel Abernathy McCollum.

The family will receive friends at Almon Funeral Home on Sunday evening from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m.

Funeral service will be Monday, May 2, 2011 at 2 p.m. at the chapel of Almon Funeral Home with Dr. Dean Milford officiating.

Pallbearers will be Phil Stamps, Bobby Brown, Leighton Alston, Jimmy Summerville, Kevin Summerville and Lamar Fricks.

Interment will be in Carroll Memory Gardens with American Legion Post #143 folding and presenting the flag.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Carroll County Soup Kitchen, P.O. Box 2457, Carrollton, GA 30112.
