U.S. Congressman, U.S. Senator. He graduated from Williams College in 1797, studied law, admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Northampton, Massachusetts. He was the district attorney for Hampshire County and a member of the Massachusetts State House of Representatives (1811-14). In 1815 he was elected as a Federalist to the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Congresses, serving until 1819. After leaving Congress, he was elected to the United States Senate in 1820 to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Prentiss Mellen, serving (1820-27). An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he lived in retirement until his death.
