Helmuth G. Sonnenburg, 77, of 8014 Carstens Lake Road, Manitowoc, died late Sunday evening, February 24, at Sheboygan Memorial Hospital, Sheboygan.
Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Newtonburg. The Rev. Keith Haberkorn will officiate with burial to follow at St. John Lutheran Cemetery, Newtonburg.
Mr. Sonnenburg was born March 11, 1907, in the Town of Newton, Manitowoc County, son of the late Herman S. and Augusta Haselow Sonnenburg. He attended St. John Lutheran School in Newtonburg and was a graduate of Lincoln High School in 1925.
Mr. Sonnenburg farmed in the Town of Newton for many years, until retiring in 1979. He married the former Elvira Castens on June 22, 1929, at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Newtonburg. The couple had the honor of celebrating their 55th Wedding Anniversary last June. Mr. Sonnenburg was a member of Pine River Sportsman Club, Manitowoc Organ Society, charter member and past president of the Newton Lions club, a charter member of Newton Fire Department and a member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church and past president of thecongregation.
Survivors include his wife, Elvira; two daughters and sons-in-law, Marilyn and Donald Hammel of Manitowoc and Arlyle and Clifford Doxpator of Milwaukee; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Walter and Eldora Sonnenburg and Marvin Sonnenburg, all of Manitowoc; a sister, Mrs. Sadie Dummer of Manitowoc; five grandchildren, Keith, David, Dennis, Daniel and Dawn; eight grandchildren (sic), nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends also survived. He was preceded in death by three infant brothers, a step brother and two step sisters.
Friends may call at Parkside Funeral Home, Manitowoc, form 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday afternoon and on Wednesday from 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. and then at the church from noon until the hour of service.
