U.S. Congressman. He attended Lancaster Academy, graduated from Brown University Rhode Island in 1830, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1833 and commenced to practice law in Worcester, Massachusetts. Entering politics, he was a member of the Massachusetts State House of Representatives in 1842, commissioner of bankruptcy in 1842, judge of probate (1844-48), presidential elector on the Whig ticket in 1848 and judge of the Massachusetts Supreme Court (1853-59). In 1861, he was elected as a Unionist to the Thirty-seventh Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Charles F. Adams, serving until 1863. Declining a re-nomination, he again engaged in the practice of law and served as vice president of the American Antiquarian Society from 1867 until his death.
