Out near Clintonville on Tuesday of last week, the 13th, Floyd Burns, aged about 35 years, son of Squire Chris Burns, was killed by lightning in a way quite unusual. He had gone squirrel hunting in the forenoon and, seeing a storm coming on, took refuge in the hollow of a large chestnut tree in which he could stand in a very nearly erect position. The tree was struck by lightning and Mr Burns was killed. As he did not return when expected his brother went in search of him and found him standing in the upright hollow of the tree stone dead, his knees slightly bent and the marks of the stroke very discernible on his head, face and body. His unfortunate death was a shock to his family and friends and particularly to his aged mother who leaned on him for support. Mr Burns was an honored member of the Meadow Bluff Lodge of Odd Fellows who conducted the funeral according to the ceremonies of the order.
