Published: Saturday, 21 Jan 1950, Charleston Gazette p. 1

State Supreme Court Judge Jo N. Kenna died of a heart attack at about 7 p.m. yesterday in a Charleston restaurant.

Judge Kenna had suffered no recent illness. He accompanied his wife to Kanawha Airport a short time before his death. Mrs. Kenna left the city to visit relatives in Tennessee.

The widely known jurist had celebrated his 62nd birthday on Jan. 10. Judge Kenna was elected to the Supreme Court for a 12-year term in 1932 and reelected in 1944. His second term would have ended Dec. 31, 1956. He was elected a member of the House of Delegates from Kanawha County in 1930.

A native of Charleston, he attended public schools here before entering Mt. St. Mary's College. He received his law degree from the University of Virginia in 1910, and immediately began the practice of law in Charleston.

He was married June 22, 1913, to the former Miss Louise Montcastle of Knoxville, Tenn. He served as an assistant U. S. district attorney during the Wilson administration.

Judge Kenna was the son of the late John E. and Anna Benninghaus Kenna. John Kenna, U. S. senator, figured in the early days of West Virginia's statehood and was one of the men who helped build up the state after it separated from Virginia.

He was a Mason and Shriner and belonged to the BPO Elks, Knights of Pythias and the college fraternity Phi Kappa Psi. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. Judge Kenna lived at 501 Swarthmore Ave.

Surviving besides his wife are a son, Lee M. Kenna, a Charleston attorney; a daughter, Mrs. Quin Morton of Charleston; two brothers, Arthur L. Kenna of Charleston, a State Road Commission employe; and John E. Kenna, of the West Virginia Heating and Plumbing Co. in Charleston; a sister, Mrs. Mary Kenna Elkins of Washington, D.
