U.S. Senator. He graduated from Yale College in 1788, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1791, moved to New Hampshire and established a law practice. Entering politics, he served as Attorney General of New Hampshire (1802-05). In 1813, he was elected as a Federalist to the U. S. Senate, serving until he resigned in 1817. After leaving the Senate, he served as a member of the New Hampshire State House of Representatives (1820-21, 24) and was president of the U.S. Bank of Portsmouth (1828-29). Moving to Boston, Massachusetts, in 1832, he was a chamber law counselor until his death.
