Born to Theodore and Margaret (Gappa) Mendyk on the family farm near Paplin where he received his early education in Paplin area schools. He worked several jobs before he moved to Omaha and went to work for the Greyhound Bus Lines. He worked for Trailways Bus Line for 25 years. The couple moved to Ashton to an acreage after retirement. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, his dogs and driving his tractor. He was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church of Ashton.

Survived by his wife Carmella and one sister, Theresa Cavanaugh. He was preceded in death by five sisters: Connie Kuszak, Bertha Wagner, Evelyn Gier, Mary Mendyk and Cecelia Peters: and three brothers, Walter, Sylvester and Floren Mendyk.
