US Congressman, US Diplomat. Elected to represent Massachusetts' 5th District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1855 to 1861. Also served as a Member of the Massachusetts State Senate in 1852, United States Minister to China from 1861 to 1867, and Envoy to China in 1868. He was the author of the Burlingame Treaty of 1868, between the United States and China, granting China most favored nation status and granted rights and protections to Chinese immigrant laborers. Most of the rights granted the Chinese immigrants in the Burlingame Treaty were taken away in the Chinese Exclusionary Acts starting in 1882. The City of Burlingame, California was named after Anson Burlingame. Burlingame, Kansas was also named in honor of Anson, Burlingame in 1857.
