Geneva A. Wunderlich, 91, of Weyauwega, formerly of Stevens Point, died Wednesday, Aug. 3, 2011, at the Weyauwega Health Care Center, after a long illness.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Aug. 20, 2011, at 11 a.m., at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 1919 Wyatt Ave., Stevens Point, with the Rev. Tom Petersen officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 19, at the Boston Funeral Home, 1649 Briggs St., Stevens Point, and for one hour before the service at the church.

Geneva, mother of six daughters and one son, grandmother of 19, great-grandmother of 10, and retired second grade teacher, was born Dec. 12, 1919, on a farm near Cottonwood, Minn., in Lyon County, to Theodore H. Knudson and Bergitta (Grande) Knudson. She graduated from Cottonwood High School in 1937, and from Bethany College, Mankato, Minn., in 1940. She taught first and second grade at St. Stephanus Lutheran School in St. Paul, Minn. from 1940-42.

On Dec. 26, 1942, she married the Rev. Herbert P. Wunderlich at Hope Lutheran Church in St. Louis, Mo., where he served as assistant pastor. Over the next 15 years, they moved many times, as he served churches in Warrensburg, Mo., St. Paul, Minn., and Stevens Point. Over those 15 years, they became the parents of seven children.

In February, 1958, while serving as pastor of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Stevens Point, the Rev. Wunderlich underwent heart surgery to replace a mitral valve. He didn't survive. At the age of 38, Geneva was a widow with seven children ranging in age from six months to 14 years. She moved her children from the parsonage to a house she purchased a few blocks north of St. Paul's on Wyatt Avenue. She lived there until 2002.

She went back to college at Wisconsin State University in Stevens Point (WSU-SP), graduating in June, 1970, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Kindergarten-Primary Education. She taught second grade teacher in Junction City, and later second grade at Plover-Whiting School, retiring in 1985.

Geneva loved most things Norwegian, and wouldn't think of passing up an opportunity to go to a lutefisk dinner served in Lutheran Church basements in neighboring towns. She also loved to travel. She studied in England one summer, and, in retirement, she traveled to Norway, Australia, and New Zealand.

Geneva remained active at St. Paul's, participating in many of the organizations in the church and school. She played piano for worship services at local nursing homes, and was also a Hospice volunteer.

Geneva was preceded in death by her husband and her parents; brother, Kay (Ione) Knudson; sister, Evangeline (Allen) Kraft; brother, Norman Knudson; her father and mother-in-law, Traugott and Sophie (Schlechte) Wunderlich; sister-in-law, Vera Wunderlich; sister-in-law, Norma (Walter) Spallek; and brother-in-law, Frederic (Shirley) Wunderlich.
