U.S. Congressman. He graduated from Harvard University in 1854, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1857 and commenced to practice law in Woburn, Massachusetts. During the Civil War, he served in the U.S. Navy as assistant paymaster and in the Mississippi Squadron under Admiral Porter in the Vicksburg and Red River campaigns. After the war, he engaged in mercantile pursuits, was president of the First National Bank and a member of the Massachusetts State House of Representatives, (1880-82). In 1885, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-ninth and Fiftieth Congresses, serving until 1889. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he served as director of the Boston & Albany Railroad until his death.
