U.S. Congressman. He graduated from Colby College, attended Harvard Law School in 1905, was admitted to the bar in 1906, the Massachusetts bar in 1906, and commenced the practice of law in Boston, Massachusetts. He was a member of the Melrose Board of Aldermen, (1912-14, 16) and a member of the Massachusetts State Guard and legal adviser to aid draft registrants during World War I. After the war, he was Mayor of Melrose, Massachusetts, (1921-23), served in the Massachusetts State House of Representatives, (1925-28), member of the Massachusetts State Senate, (1929-41) and chairman of the State Commission on Administration and Finance, in 1942. In 1943, he was elected as a Republican to the Seventy-eighth Congress and to the next five succeeding Congresses, serving until 1955. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was a member of the Massachusetts State Board of Tax Appeals, (1955-60). He died in retirement at age 94.
