Walter S. Smigiel, 78, of 36 Marjorie St., a 30-year wire drawer at the former Colorado Fuel and Iron Corp. in Palmer, died Friday in Baystate Medical Center in Springfield. He retired in 1972.

Born in the Three Rivers section of Palmer, he lived in Belchertown for 20 years, and in Ware for 53 years.

He was a Army veteran of World War II, serving with the Army engineers in the European Theater. He was a member of the Century Division.

He was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2577 in Ware, the Ware Golden Agers, and the American Association of Retired Persons. He was a communicant of St. Mary's Church in Ware.

He leaves his wife of 53 years, the former Matilda Rogowski; three sons, Walter Jr. of Chattanooga, Tenn., David and Thomas, both of Ware; three sisters, Helen Nietupski of the Thorndike section of Palmer, Bertha Janulewicz of Southwick and Stephanie Couture of Ware; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be Monday morning at Cebula Funeral Home in Ware, and in the church, with burial in the parish cemetery. Calling hours are this afternoon and evening.
