US Congressman, US Senator. Elected to represent Delaware in the United States House of Representatives and served from March 4, 1811 to March 3, 1815. Appointed as Secretary of State of Delaware by Governors John Clark, Jacob Stout, John Collins, Caleb Rodney, Joseph Haslet, Charles Thomas and Samuel Paynter serving from 1817 to 1827. Elected to the United States Senate to fill a vacancy and served from January 12, 1827 to March 3, 1829.
