He was in Company A, 8th Michigan Infantry Regiment, enlisting in Corunna, Shiawassee County, Michigan for a 3-year term on 24 February 1864; he was residing at Byron, Shiawassee County prior to his enlistment at 20 years of age; wounded in action on 30 September 1864 during the Battle of Popular Springs Church (Peebles Farm), part of the Petersburg Campaign in Dinwiddie County, Virginia; died of wound complications on 23 October 1864 after his 1 October left foot amputation at the ankle in the Finley General Hospital at Washington D.C. He was first interred in Arlington Heights, Virginia and later removed to the Byron Cemetery. There also exists a record of his original interment in the Point Lookout Confederate Cemetery in Maryland followed by an undated exhumation.
