Clark M. Loy, 72, Dies; Merchant Here 47 Years

Clark M. Loy 72, well known hardware dealer in Effingham for 47 years, died Saturday night in Carbondale shortly after eating dinner. His death was caused by a heart attack.

Mr. Loy was on a tour which is made annually in the spring by the Illinois State Historical society, of which he was an ardent member. He was also a life member of the American Museum of Natural History of New York; of the Illinois Geographical Society; of the Masonic lodge, Elks lodge and of the Rotary club. He was widely known for his collection of American Indian relics, which he had shown many times before clubs and organizations in and around Effingham. He had been a Republican precinct committeeman for forty years.

He was born December 17, 1881, in Effingham county. He received his early education in the Watson township schools, later attending Austin college and McKendree college in Lebanon, Ill. Loy Hardware company was founded by him on September 17, 1907.

Mr. Loy is survived by two daughters, Mrs. R.E. Hedgecock and Mrs. N.F. Devall, both of Effingham; three grandchildren, Clark Loy Hedgecock, Nancy Jane and David Avery Devall; four sisters, Mrs. Clark (Alice) Howard of West Grove, Iowa, Mrs. Lyle (Nell) Tyler of Newton, Iowa, Mrs. L. S (Bess) Covey of Popular Grove, and Mrs. York (Hazel) McClary of Belvidere; three brothers Frank, Wood and Bliss Loy, all of Effingham; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Anna Behrens Loy and a son, Robert.

The body has been taken to the family residence, 810 South Fifth street, where friends may call. funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow from Centenary Methodist church, with Rev. Edward L. Hoffman officiating. Masonic rites will also be held. Burial will be in Oakridge cemetery.

Loy Hardware Co., which was founded by Mr. Loy, will be closed all day Tuesday.

Members of Effingham lodge no 1016 B.P.O. Elks will meet at the lodge at 8 p.m. today and then go in a body to the Loy residence to pay their respects to him.
