Poline Eliza was called Lily by her family and friends. Her sister Selina would call her "little sister" which sounded like Lily when they both were very young.
Her father, Charles J. Bollin, brought her to the Ursuline Convent for protection when Sherman's troops were coming into Columbia in February 1865. Selina was a boarder there, and Lily was a day student. It was believed that the Ursuline Convent would be protected as the Mother Superior Baptista Lynch had taught General Sherman's daughter in a school in Ohio. General Sherman had given orders to his men to protect the convent. When Columbia was burned and the convent set on fire, they had to walk through the streets of Columbia to St. Peter's Catholic Church and stayed in the cemetery overnight. Lily married Dr. William Calvert McGregor on October 5, 1869, at St. Peter's Catholic Church by the Reverend J J O'Connell. Lily and her family lived at 1329 Senate Street for many years. She was much loved by all. She was known as Bama by her grandchildren.
