MRS. CLARA J. HOVEY DIES AT A VERY ADVANCED AGE
A.J. Hovey of Wolcott was called away last week by the death of his mother, Mrs. Clara J. Hovey, who passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. R.A. Porter, in Patchogue, L.I. on Tuesday, Dec. 28, in her 91st year.
Mrs. Hovey had suffered from extreme heart weakness for more than a year, but it is doubtful if this could properly be described as a disease. It was really more a manifestation of old age.
Besides the son and daughter already mentioned, she is survived by another son, George H. Hovey, of New Orleans. Her husband, Hiram Hovey, died in Lyons in 1880 [as did their eldest daughter, Frances]. A.J. Hovey was at that time closing out his business in Wolcott. He went immediately to Lyons and conducted his father's business there for sixteen years, until the younger children were grown and able to go out in life for themselves. [Another son, Frederick, died in 1902.]
Mrs. Hovey was a devoted wife and mother. With her daughter, Mrs. Porter, she lived in the Crafts house in this village for some time, up to last June when they went to Patchogue.
The funeral was held in that village, and the remains were then taken to Lyons, where on Thursday she was laid to rest beside her husband, from whom she had been separated by death for more than 40 years.
