Donna Leigh Akins, 51, passed away August 15 at Ogeechee Area Hospice, after a long, courageous battle with diabetes.
Donna graduated in 1978 from Flour Bluff High School in Corpus Christy, Texas, as an honor student. She received an Associate Degree from Del Mar College in art and continued her education at Texas A&M until her health made it impossible.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Laverne Wilson Akins; a brother, Fred Jasper Akins; her grandparents, Robie Wilson, W. J. Akins and Janie E. Akins.
Surviving are her father, Fred (Betty) Akins of Brooklet; a step-brother, Quinton Moore of Statesboro; a step-sister, Gretchen Forney of Statesboro; step-grandmother, Ilethia Henson of Claxton; aunts and uncles, Frank (Vivian) Akins, Ben (Dee Dee) Akins, Donald (Linda) Akins, Betty Joyce (Billy) Hill, Buddy Benton and Mary (Paul) Howrey; special friends and neighbors, Gary and Betty Carroll; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation will be Friday, August 19, 6-8 p.m., at J. Mellie NeSmith Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be Saturday, August 20, 2 p.m., at J. Mellie NeSmith Funeral Home Chapel.
Burial will be in Brewton Cemetery, Hagan.
Remembrances may be sent to Ogeechee Area Hospice, P. O. Box 531, Statesboro, Ga. 30458.
