He attended school in Monteview, Idaho, and the family homesteaded at Mud Lake, Idaho. Steve worked as a farm laborer and briefly in the Butte mines prior to 1930. He then became a mail carrier from Hamer to Monteview.
He married Mary E. Morrison of Salmon on December 2, 1933, in Idaho Falls. The couple moved to Birch Creek in 1934 and ranched until 1937 when they returned to Monteview and purchased the Monteview Mercantile. Their three children were born between 1934 and 1944.
The family moved to Idaho Falls in 1948 working briefly for O.P. Skaggs grocery before becoming a partner with his brother Stanley in owning and operating Gem State Flooring Company. In 1952, Steve worked at Idaho Falls Cabinet until retirement.
Steve will be remembered as a kind-hearted, patient, non-complaining spouse, parent, grandparent, and friend. He loved visiting, home cooking and cookies.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Mary of Idaho Falls, daughter, Margaret (Scott) Hansen of St. George, Utah; son, Steve R. (Cheryl) Kuharski Jr. of Austin, Texas; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. Steve was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Walter and Stanley; sister, Jennie Bare; and daughter, Carol Nelson Fitch.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 6, 2001, at 2:00 p.m. with family receiving friends one hour prior to service at Buck-Miller-Hann Funeral Home, 825 E. 17th St., in Idaho Falls. Father Bill Crowley of Christ the King Catholic Church will be officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery. Family Tribute
