Ruth Wilma Evans Phillips, 88, of Williamsburg, died on Sunday, Aug. 26, 2001. She was a native of Haverhill, Mass., and a graduate of Haverhill High School in 1932. She was a member of the Maple Street Congregational Church and the General Israel Putnam Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution in Danvers, Mass. A very independent lady, she lived by herself in Exeter, N.H., until moving to Williamsburg in 1997. She was widely known for her skill in making slipcovers, a craft she practiced for more than 50 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, R[ichard] Samuel Phillips.
She is survived by her only child, Richard S. Phillips, Jr., of Williamsburg, and his wife, Elzbieta M. Phillips; grandchildren Wiktor and Karolina. She has three nephews, Richard and Arnold Seaver of Haverhill, Mass., and Robert Phillips of Hampton Falls, N.H.
A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 30, at the Williamsburg Assembly of God. A private viewing for the family will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. today at Bucktrout Funeral Home. Arrangements by Bucktrout of Williamsburg.

Ruth Phillips, a widow since August 24, 1971, started sewing slip covers for clients in the 1940s and continued up until her death. It was a way she networked and socialized. She was a cancer survivor. She was close to her son and his family. Ruth was a really good person.
Ruth awoke during the night and surprised a 20-year-old burglar in her apartment. The burglar took away her life, her car, her wedding ring and another ring, and $60. The Commonwealth of Virginia executed the murderer on August 18, 2011.
