Virginia Lee Zimmerman Smathers, age 93, passed away on Friday, August 19, 2011, at John F. Keever, Jr., Solace Center.

A native of Wheeling, West Virginia. Virginia attended Bethany college, Bethany, W. Va. and is a graduate of West Virginia University, Virginia was the daughter of the late William Henry Zimmerman, Jr. #3, and Della Imbody/Inbody Zimmerman. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Sigmon Wayne Smathers; a brother, William Newton Zimmerman; three sisters, Ada Elizabeth Zimmerman Frazier, Eliza Jane Zimmerman Stankus, and Della June Zimmerman.

A United States Marine Corps veteran of World War II, Virginia worked as a dietician at Norborn Hospital which is now Memorial Mission Hospital. She was a member of Canton Presbyterian Church.

Virginia's Maternal Great Grandfather, Sgt Daniel S. Imbody died during the Civil War and and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.

Her paternal Great Grandfather W. H. Zimmerman #1, A native of Alexander Virginia, served in CSA as a Captain in the 14th Louisiana Calvery,(Polish Brigade) W.H #1 left his family in 1855 and resurfaced in 1857 in New Orleans. He died in 1878 and is buried in N.O.

Both Great Grandfathers bio's are found in Find-A-Grave.

Her sister, Eliza Jane Zimmerman Stankus, also in buried in Arlington National.

She is survived by two daughters, Betty Jane Smathers and Fritzie S. Wise and her husband, Tim, of Waynesville.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Sunday, August 21, 2011, at Morning Star Cemetery with the Reverend Esta Jarrett officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Haywood Regional Medical Center Hospice, 560 Leroy George Drive, Clyde, NC 28721.
