Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. The third cousin of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, he enlisted in the Union army at the age of 17, in the spring of 1861. He soon became a First Sergeant in Company K, of the 26th Pennsylvania Infantry. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for actions on August 30, 1862, at Bull Run, Virginia, and on July 2, 1863 at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. He received the Medal of Honor on July 2, 1887. His citation reads "At Bull Run, VA., recaptured the colors, which had been seized by the enemy. At Gettysburg captured a Confederate color bearer and colors, in which effort he was severely wounded." As a result of this wound he lost his left leg. He later served as a Brevet Captain in the Union Army. In the 1890s he served as United States Consul in Brussels. In 2003, two persons, Edward and Gisela Fedora, were charged with Unlawful Sale of a Medal of Honor. They sold medals awarded to United States Navy Seaman Robert Blume (Spanish-American War Recipient) and to United States Army First Sergeant George Washington Roosevelt (Civil War Recipient) to an FBI agent.
