G. VALLESKEY WHO FOUNDED VILLAGE DIES
Former Official of Town of Rockland Was 87; Funeral Wednesday.

Gustave Valleskey, Sr., 87, founder of the village of Collins in the western part of the county, died Sunday morning at the homestead farm, now operated by his son, Gustave, Jr. Despite the handicap of having both legs amputated 11 years ago, Mr. Valleskey enjoyed fairly good health until a short time ago. He was able to get about with the aid of a wheel chair.

Funeral Wednesday
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. from the home and at two o'clock from the Evangelical Lutheran church, Rockland. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Mr. Valleskey was born in West Prussia, Germany, in 1850 and when a boy of six came to this county with his parents. They located on a farm along the bank of the Manitowoc river in the town of Rockland. He, walking the six miles through woods and swamps. Mr. Valleskey married Miss Mertz who later died. In 1874 he married Miss Friedericka Matznick. He served his town as supervisor and was elected town treasurer for several years. For 24 years he was treasurer of the church congregation in Rockland and a member of the church council.In the early nineties surveyors of the old Wisconsin Central road__(line underinked)__Neenah, laid out the right-of-way through the Valleskey farm in Rockland. In 1896 after the line was built a station was located on the Valleskey property. Several of the residents wanted to name it Valleskey but he declined the honor and the village became Collins.

Wife Died in 1937
Practically all the business places and homes in Collins are located on land owned at one time by Mr. Valleskey. Mr. Valleskey retired from active farming many years ago. In June, 1924, Mr. and Mrs. Valleskey observed their golden wedding anniversary and in 1934 their sixtieth wedding anniversary. Mrs. Valleskey died May 11, 1937. Survivors are five sons, Martin, Charles, Gustave, Jr., and Elmer, all of Collins, Adolph, city; four daughters, Mrs. Tina Kamke, Oconto, Mrs. William Mahnke, Milwaukee, Mrs. Henry Allheiser, Shawano, Mrs. Elmer Voigt, Collins, a brother Charles, Collins.
