His parents, Job & Hannah Minton Jenkins, from Wales, named him after President James Garfield. Edward had a distinguished military career for the U.S. Army as a corporal. He served from Oct. 7, 1901 until Oct. 6, 1904, including in the Philippines during the Spanish American War.

Edward had five wives including the widow of his brother Wm. Lee, who was Erma Laurella Harley Jenkins. He raised their sons, Alan Minton & Lee Wm. as his own. One of his other wives was Jessie Westfall from Canada whom he divorced Mar.30, 1916. Mae J. Smykal was his final wife. Everyone called her Aunt Mae. They lived in Cheswick, PA
