He graduated from Milford High School in June 1944 and immediately joined the U.S. Navy. He served in the Navy for the remainder of World War II.
He attended Defiance College in Ohio for one year. August 14, 1947, he married Dorothy Emerson, a marriage that lasted 64 years and produced two children, David B. Appleton and Dorothy C. (Dee) Appleton.
He proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and upon his discharge returned to Toledo, Ohio, and completed his education at the University of Toledo.
He taught school in Charlotte, Mich., earned his master's degree at Michigan State University in East Lansing, and moved to Nevada with his family in 1963 to teach at Boulder City High School and subsequently at Basic High School in Henderson until his retirement.
He is survived by his wife; son; daughter; daughter-in-law, Jo Ann Armistead Appleton; brother, Robert L. Appleton of Tennessee; 10 grandchildren and spouses, Joe and Steph Appleton, Jim and Patty Appleton, Shera and Blaine Hawkes, Michael and Jenni Appleton, Melanie Appleton, Jeni and Josh Gates, Richard and Sondra Appleton, Robert and Crisi Appleton, Amanda Aiello, and Auralie and John Jensen; two nieces; 27 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
He loved the desert and will be fondly remembered climbing the hills and hiking through the valleys of southern Nevada, Arizona, and California.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 23, at Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 1900 Buchanan Blvd. in Boulder City.
