US Diplomat. Born in Ellsworth Maine, he was the grandson of John Milton Hay and William Collins Whitney. He served in the United States Army Air Force during World War II. He later entered goverment service and served many posts including, Alternate Delegate to the Republican National Convention from New York in 1956, to the United States Ambassador to Great Britain from 1957 to 1961. In 1958 his company acquired control of the New York Herald Tribune Newspaper and in 1961 he became its publisher, until it ceased publication in 1966. After the cease of the publication, it did continue to publish the International Herald Tibune. He died in 1982.
