Julia Manly was the daughter of Governor Charles Manly and his wife, Charity Hare (Haywood) Manly. Julia married James Charles Sheffield McDowell (1831-1863). Julia and her husband owned the Quaker Meadows Plantation located in Morganton, North Carolina. (Morganton is a city named for Daniel Morgan, a Revolutionary War hero). Julia's husband, James Charles Sheffield McDowell, was a Colonel in the Confederate troops during the Civil War. He was killed in the war.
Julia and James Charles were the parents of four children: Sara, Cora, Annie and Charles Manly McDowell.
