MAN SHIFTS WEIGHT IN CANOE; PAYS WITH LIFE

Rocking the boat proved fatal to Thomas Hynes, Jr., 21-year-old Chicago man, Sunday evening about 8:15 o'clock when he was plunged into the waters of Flint lake from a canoe which capsized about two hundred and fifty feet off Edgewater Beach.

Riding with Hynes in the ill-fatted craft were Willard Broxham and James Miller, both of Chicago. They saved their lives by swimming to shore after battling with the drowning man who was of greater physical proportions.

According to Broxham and Miller, in testimony given to Dr. Herman. Seipel, deputy coroner of Porter county, the three men came to the lake Saturday afternoon, leasing the L.M. Chumley cottage for over the 4th.

The red canvas canoe which the trio had purchased in Chicago was brought along. In this boat the three men started across the lake with Broxham and Miller paddling, and Hynes sitting in the middle. Spectators along the beach saw Hynes shift his weight from side to side and also heard his companions shout warning to him to desist.

Many were silent witnesses to the struggle which fell ____ after the flimsy boat was _____ Hynes, unable to swim, grasped onto Broxham and Miller ______would go under ______ at Hynes grasp_____ companions. ____efforts in evading Hynes both men finally made for the shore and reached it only by herculean efforts.

Hynes sank in many feet of water before aid could reach him. The body from all accounts became caught in weeds at the bottom and defied the efforts of divers and grab hooks to dislodge it.

Practically all night workers searched for the body without success. At 6 o'clock Monday morning, Edward Jones, Thomas Benton and Deputy Coroner H.O. Seipel, dragging the lake in the immediate vicinity where Hynes went down brought the body to the surface.

Deputy Coroner Seipel conducted the inquest and returned a verdict of death by accidental drowning. The remains were removed to the F.A. LePeil & Son funeral home on Monroe street, where it was prepared at once for shipment to Chicago.

According to Daniel Laughlin, 318 71st street, Chicago, undertaker, and cousin of the dead man, who came to this city to take charge of the remains, Hynes was a son of Thomas Hynes, Sr., and besides the father, is survived by a brother. His mother died six years ago.

Funeral services for Hynes will be held Thursday in Chicago, with burial in Mr. Olivet cemetery. For several years the decedent had been employed as a plumber's apprentice.
