US Senator. He graduated from Kenyon College and then served in the Mexican War. After the war, he studied law, admitted to the bar in 1852 and commenced to practice law in Mount Vernon, Ohio. He relocated to Winona, Minnesota, in 1856, continued to practice law, was a member Minnesota State House of Representatives (1857-60) and was a member of the Minnesota State Senate, (1861-64). In 1865, he was elected as a Unionist to the United States Senate and served until his death at age 41.
