Hilda E. (Barter) Tenney, 87, died April 5, 2006, at a Penobscot nursing facility.
She was born Jan. 26, 1919, in Bucksport, daughter of Thomas and Helen (Sweet) Barter.
She was raised in Stonington and moved to Verona Island in the 1950's. She worked at Spurling's Grocery, Verona Island, for many years, was an avid bowler, liked to knit and crochet, and enjoyed attending Bucksport Senior Citizens. She was a member of the Elm Street Congregational Church, Bucksport, and the Verona Women's Club.
She is survived by five children, Joanne Jackson and her husband, John, of Bucksport, Elaine Woodbridge and her husband, Robert, of Florida, Sandra Willette of New York, Janet Kelley and her husband, Gary, of Prospect, and Lisa Tenney of Verona Island; 18 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; nephew, Harlan Gray of Penobscot; many special friends.
Hilda was predeceased by her husband, Cyril C. Tenney; son, Gilbert Tenney; sister, Abby Chambers; sister-in-law, Kathleen Gray.
A graveside funeral service for family and friends will be held 10 a.m. Monday, April 10, at Verona Cemetery, Verona Island, with the Rev. Linda A. Smith officiating. Immediately after the service, a gathering of conversation and refreshment will be held at Brown Hall, Bucksport.
