" The Portland Observer, Wednesday, August 14, 1889.
Died — In this village, Friday morning August 9th, Capt. William H. Williams, aged 65 years. Death resulted from enlarged prostate.

Deceased was born at Elizabeth, New Jersey, Nov. 27th, 1823.

He enlisted May 22d, 1861 as a private in Co. A. 2d New Jersey regiment. During the war that followed the rank of captain was conferred upon him. In addition to this he has held three other officer's commissions. He enlisted five times and received as many discharges, two for disability, and three to accept commissions. His final discharge was received in September 1864 while a member of Co. B, 35th N.J.

The gruff, rugged address inherited while a commanding officer in the war seemed to cling to him till death, but his heart always went out in sympathy for a comrade in distress. Patriotic and true to the welfare of his country, he was ever ready to lend his assistance to anything pertaining to the interests of the soldier. He has been an active member of John Megarah post since its organization, and has twice been elected its commander.

The funeral services were held in the Methodist church Monday afternoon, Rev. J. W. Hallenbeck officiating, assisted by Rev. D. E. Millard, Chaplain of post. The post attended in a body.

Mr. Williams leaves a wife and four children, Edward of this place, Harry who is now in Central America, William of Ionia, and Mrs. Emma Dalzelle, an adopted daughter, of Muir.
