He was a native of Asheville and was a son of the late Charles Bascombe and Nina Miller Joyner, Sr. He lived most of his life in West Asheville and was known by his family and friends as "Charlie" or "Nick". He spent most of his working life in the automobile business before retiring to live in Treadway. He was a US Army veteran who served in the Korean Conflict.

He is survived by his wife, JoAnn Garrison Joyner of Treadway; two sons Kenneth Charles Joyner of Black Mountain and Jeffery Charles Joyner of Asheville; one daughter Susan Annette Hart, her husband Edward T. Hart, and their children Emily Caroline Hart and Adam Edward Hart, all of Alpharetta, GA.; and a brother, Joseph A. oyner of Weaverville.
