Death of Pioneer

Resident of Lyons Township for Many Years

The late James A. Blackmer, whose funeral was held from his home, "Oak View Farm," last Tuesday, was one of the pioneers of this locality.

He was born at Seneca, Ontario Co. N.Y., January 26th 183? and was a son of Ezra and Dolly Maranda Blackmer. He located on his farm in Lyons township as a young man, and was married to Ann B. Douglass at Troy, Oakland Co., Michigan, August 22nd 1864, and brought his wife directly to the home prepared for them.

He was united with the Baptist church at Pewamo March 17th 1867, and was soon after elected to the office of Deacon, an office he held till his death.

Mr. and Mrs. Blackmer had their family circle increased and brightened by seven children, four of whom survive: William, Ora, Minnie (Mrs. Jay Townsend) and Elizabeth (Mrs. Eugene Vance), all of whom reside in this vicinity.

The deceased met with an accident six weeks from the day he died, which hastened his death, which took place Saturday, June 14th. One week before his death his wife was stricken with paralysis, which made a condition very trying to the family, as only a portion of the home could be used for the funeral service, least it might disturb the mother. The deceased leaves to mourn his loss, apart from the sons and daughters above mentioned, four sons-in-law and eleven grandchildren, together with a brother and sister, besides many other relatives, and a host of friends.

Mrs. Jas. H. Ruel and Mrs. Geo. Steadman favored with musical selections, and the sons and sons-in-law were bearers. Rev. D. B. Davidson was requested to take charge of the services and had Rev. F. MacGirr of Pewamo assist in the services. The many and beautiful floral offerings bore silent evidence of the esteem in which deceased was held. The burial was in Lyons Cemetery.

The following from out of town were there for the funeral: Mr. and Mrs. Newton Blackmer and daughters of Carson City; Howard Collins and children, Claude Collins and Erwin Collins of Eaton Rapids; Mr. and Mrs. Newton Douglas and daughter of Smyrna; Ezra Blackmer, wife and daughter and Mrs. Jas. Blackmer of Carson City and Wm. L. Davidson of Lansing.
