He touched many lives while serving as a teacher at Chapel Hill High School, and continued this influence as Lay Associate and Associate Pastor at Edenton Street UMC, working with the youth program and serving as the membership cultivation minister. He was the first staff member hired at Methodist College in Fayetteville in 1959 and served there as Director of Public Relations and Development, recruiting the first graduating classes. Under his leadership and genuine love for the students, Methodist College grew to an enrollment high of 1180 in 1967. He not only took most of the college's photos while there, but developed and readied these photos for publications. In 1968, he left Methodist College to serve as Conference Treasurer and Business Administrator of the NC Conference of the United Methodist Church. It was during this time that he was asked by ministers to lead their church congregations on Christian stewardship, again touching so many lives by helping others to understand God's gifts to us.
He was a beloved member and mentor of this Conference. Dr. McAdams was awarded the Methodist College Medallion in 1979 for outstanding service and substantial contributions to the college. In 2005, he received a Doctorate of Humanities from Methodist University for his years of dedication to the college and the United Methodist Church. A long time member of Benson Memorial UMC and a devoted Christian, he spent his entire life helping and serving others and leading others to Christ. One of his favorite statements was that "for a Christian, there is never a problem, only an opportunity".
A much loved husband, father and grandfather, Dr. McAdams was predeceased on November 13, 1998 by his wife of 56 years, Verna Brock McAdams, and is survived by his four children and eleven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
The family would appreciate donations to the Charles and Verna McAdams Endowed Scholarship, Methodist University, 5400 Ramsey St., Fayetteville, NC 28311. Donations may also be made to Hospice of Wake County and Springmoor Retirement Community, both of Raleigh.
