Dodd, James M 10-02-1828 - 02-15-1894

The 1850 census for Gwinnett County Georgia, Sugarhill, Military District 550, House 925, shows the James M Dodd family.
James is Head of House and age 21 born in Georgia.
Sarah is Wife, age 21 and also born in Georgia.
Virginia is 8 month old daughter.
The Dodd's owned their own farm.

The same family is listed in the same area in 1860 Census with four more children. Misoura 8, Parthenia 7, Martha 5, and Mary 1. Virginia is now 10 and both James and Sarah are 30.

James M Dodd become a private in the Co. K 10 GA INF, C.S.A. on June 27 1862.
He was wounded in the left arm necessitating amputation at Sharpsburg, Maryland on September 17 1862.
He was captured at Sharpsburg on September 27 1862.
He was paroled at Fort McHenry, Maryland and sent to Fortress Monroe, Virginia for exchange on October 13 1862, and was exchanged at Aikens Landing, Virginia on October 17 1862.
He was discharged, disability at Richmond, Virginia on November 2 1862.
He went home to Gwinnett County Gerogia.

In the 1870 Census the family is still living in the Sugarhill area. James is 40 and Sarah is 43.
Missouri is listed as 18, Virginia is 19, Pathena is 16, Martha is 11.
Mary is missing from the census report and Martha is Marys age but named Matha.
There is also two new children. Sarah age 6, James I. age 3.
James I. is the Great Grand Father of Jerry Rice who would not be here today if James M had not survived that wound on September 17 1862.

James is listed in the 1880 Census with this same family but it is unknown if he was listed in the 1890 censue because it was burned.
Through the years James always said he was born in Georgia and so were his parents. But in 1880 he says his father was born in Virginia and his mother was born in South Carolina.

James is not listed in the 1900 Censuis report. He passed away in 1894. See Sarah Dodd for her Census reports.

In Buford there is a road name Sycamore Road that runs off Buford Damn Road. Jimmy Doddy Road runs off this road.
Jimmy Dodd Road is maned after James M Dodd. This was at one time his driveway and he had built the road.
This is the old home place for the Dodds when they moverd to the Sugarhill area. The old Dodd house stood here in this area close to the location of the two roads.

The Family Bible.
Years ago when I first started working on my Family Tree I was alowed to see a Bible with the following names and dates printed in it. Now years later I cannot remember who had this bible.
Virginia 10.02.1849
Martha A 02.06.1856 - 04.18.1886
Mary E 05.05.1858 - 01.04.1862
Permilla 08.08.1860 - 08.05.1863
Sarah D 06.18.1863
James I 01.26.1867
With this Bible listing I can see that Mary passed away between Census reports. Also a child not listed in the Census reports, Permilla was also born and died between Census reports.
For some reason Missouri and Pathena J are not listed in the Bible.
The 1910 Census says Sarah had 8 kids and 4 were living. Five from the 1860 Census. A sixth one passed between reports alone with Mary, and then Sarah and James in 1870 make eight.
In 1910 Sarah D. and Missouri are living with the older Sarah C. and James I. has his own family. Martha, Mary and Permilla are dead. Pathema J is married to W.C. Knight. That leaves only Virginia not found. I think she died an old maid.
