Born in Canada, the son of Eli Taylor and Marie (DeWitt) Taylor, he grew up in England, his parents having returned to England [from Canada] when he was six. At sixteen, he came to America and enlisted in the Army.
The coal industry drew him to West Virginia. The marriage record gives his occupation as "miner".
He married Sarah Jane Minor, the daughter of Thompson Minor and Isabel Elizabeth (Bailey) Minor, on July 12, 1886, in Mercer County, WV.

Two of their grandchildren died during the influenza epidemic of 1918.
