Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Memphis Funeral Home Poplar Chapel with burial in Memory Hill Gardens.
Dr. Barton received his PhD from Harvard Divinity School and pastored several Churches of Christ including Holmes Road Church of Christ in Memphis. He established the philosophy department at University of Memphis and served as chairman for 19 years. He founded the Southern Journal of Philosophy, which is now distributed worldwide. He also served on the National Conference of Christians and Jews. He was published poet and author.
Dr. Barton, the husband of Elizabeth Barton, also leaves three daughters, Alison Bratton and Rebecca Crites, both of Nashville, and Sylvia Perry of Memphis; a son, John Barton of Statesboro, Ga., and 11 grandchildren.
The family requests that any memorials be made to St. Paul's United Methodist building fund.
